The power steering produces high temperatures and pressure in the power steering oil. It causes
oxidation, breakdown of the oil film, reduced lubrication effect and a build-up of
contaminants that will eventually wear down seals, valves and friction surfaces.
Lack of maintenance will affect how the power steering works and can cause
leaks and a premature breakdown.
Symptoms that indicate that the servo system has gone too long without maintenance are:
Dark color of the servo oil.
The power steering makes noises. It is difficult to turn the steering wheel. The oil is leaking.
High mileage (ask when the servo was in service last) Heavy to control on cold start. Difficult to turn.
The solution
